How to Book a Billboard in Jamaica: From Enquiry to Artwork Live

Most people booking their first billboard in Jamaica have the same worry: that it is a slow, opaque process involving permits, councils and a lot of waiting. For an existing site, it is not. A campaign can be live in under two weeks.

Here is the whole process, start to finish.

Step 1 — Decide what you are trying to do

Before looking at sites, get clear on one thing: are you building awareness, or driving action? The answer changes everything downstream.

Awareness campaigns want reach and repetition — high-traffic corridors, long durations, a simple message. Action campaigns want proximity — a board near the store, the branch, the development. A billboard two minutes from your location outperforms a busier one across the island.

Step 2 — Choose the parish and the corridor

Jamaica is small, but its traffic is highly concentrated. Kingston and St Andrew carry the bulk of daily commuter volume, and the corridors through Half Way Tree, Cross Roads, New Kingston and Constant Spring Road do most of the work.

Outside the capital, the volume sits in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Spanish Town, Portmore and Mandeville. If you are targeting visitors rather than residents, the NMIA arrivals screen and the north coast sites around Ocho Rios and Montego Bay reach them at the moment they land.

Browse by parish on the locations map.

Step 3 — Pick static or digital

Static gives you exclusive ownership of a physical space. Nobody else appears on that board. It suits long campaigns and single, consistent messages.

Digital gives you flexibility. You share the site with other advertisers in a rotating loop, but you can change creative daily, run different messages at different hours, and react to events. It suits promotions, launches and anything time-sensitive.

If you are unsure, look at the outdoor digital network and the classic static formats side by side.

Step 4 — Check availability

This is the step that catches people out. Billboard space is finite and the good sites book ahead, particularly around carnival, Reggae Sumfest and the Christmas retail season. If you want a specific corridor in a specific month, ask early.

Tell us the parish, format and target months and we will come back with what is actually free, not a generic rate card.

Step 5 — Approve the rate and sign

Once availability is confirmed you will get pricing for the specific sites, the booking period, and whether production is included. Our terms of service cover what happens on both sides.

Step 6 — Supply the artwork

This is where campaigns most often slip. Billboard artwork is not a scaled-up social post — it is read at speed, from distance, usually by someone driving.

Three rules that matter more than anything else:

  • Six words or fewer. If a driver cannot read it in about five seconds, it is too long.
  • One idea. Not three offers and a QR code.
  • Contrast. Dark text on light, or light on dark. Mid-tones disappear in Jamaican sunlight.

If you do not have a designer, we produce artwork in house — see our services.

Step 7 — Production and installation

For static sites, artwork goes to print and a crew installs it. For digital, the file is loaded to the screen and goes live on the scheduled date. Digital has no production lead time, which is why it suits short-notice campaigns.

For static, allow roughly a week between final artwork approval and the board going live.

Step 8 — Live, and what happens next

Once the campaign is running, keep two things in view. First, whether the creative is working — on digital you can change it mid-flight, so use that. Second, whether the site is performing for you, which tells you where to book next time.

What about permits?

If you are advertising on an existing site, you do not need one. The structure is already approved. Permits only come into play if you are erecting a new billboard — in which case read our permit application guide or hand it to our municipal applications service.
