The most common objection to outdoor advertising in Jamaica is that you cannot measure it. That is not quite true. You cannot measure it the way you measure a Facebook campaign — there is no click, no pixel, no attribution window. But billboards can be measured, and the businesses that do it buy far better than the ones that do not.
This is a practical framework you can apply to a real campaign.
Start by deciding what the board is for
You cannot measure a campaign with no stated objective. Before booking, write down which of these you are buying:
- Awareness — more people should know the brand exists
- Consideration — people already aware should think of you first
- Action — people should visit, call or buy
Each is measured differently, and conflating them is why most billboard campaigns feel unmeasurable.
Set a baseline before the board goes live
This is the step people skip, and skipping it makes everything afterwards guesswork. For at least four weeks before launch, record:
- Weekly enquiries, by source where you can capture it
- Walk-in or footfall counts
- Direct and branded search traffic to your website
- Weekly revenue for the relevant product or branch
Without a baseline you are comparing the campaign period to a feeling.
Five things you can actually measure
1. Branded search lift
The most reliable proxy for outdoor working. People who see a billboard do not click — they search your name later. Watch branded search impressions in Google Search Console, and watch direct traffic. A campaign that moves nothing here has probably not registered.
Segment by region where possible. If the board is in Montego Bay, look at search interest in St James rather than nationally.
2. A dedicated route
Put something on the board that exists nowhere else — a distinct phone number, a short vanity URL, a landing page, or a code staff can ask about. Response rates will look small; that is normal for outdoor and does not mean it failed. It gives you a floor, not a total.
3. Ask people
Underrated and cheap. Add “How did you hear about us?” to your enquiry form and brief counter staff to ask. Outdoor is systematically under-reported in self-attribution because people do not remember where they saw something — so treat it as directional, and as another floor.
4. Geographic lift
The strongest method available without formal research. Compare performance in the parish where the board runs against a comparable parish where it does not, over the same period. If Kingston moves and Montego Bay does not, and nothing else changed, you have a real signal. Our network spans Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and beyond, which makes this kind of split practical.
5. Before, during, after
Track the same metrics for four weeks before, the full campaign, and four weeks after. Outdoor has a tail — recall persists after the board comes down. A campaign judged only on its live weeks understates itself.
Putting a number on it
Once you have a lift figure, the arithmetic is ordinary:
Incremental revenue = (campaign-period revenue – baseline revenue) attributable to the campaign
ROI = (incremental gross profit – campaign cost) / campaign cost
Two disciplines matter. Use gross profit, not revenue — revenue ROI flatters everything. And be honest about what else was running; if you launched a promotion in the same window, the billboard does not get all of it.
Give it long enough
The most common measurement error in Jamaica is judging a billboard after three weeks. Outdoor works through accumulated exposure. A commuter needs to pass a board repeatedly before it registers, and the effect compounds over a couple of months.
Book a minimum of three months before drawing conclusions. Anything shorter measures novelty, not effect.
A realistic scorecard
| Metric | Where it comes from | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|
| Branded search lift | Search Console, analytics | High |
| Geographic split | Your own sales data | High |
| Dedicated number or URL | Call logs, analytics | Medium — a floor, not a total |
| Self-reported attribution | Enquiry forms, staff | Low — directional only |
| Overall revenue movement | Accounts | Medium — confounded by everything else |
